The year 2024 marked another important milestone in Sri Lankan Majlis Qatar (SLMQ)’s commitment to advancing education under the theme “Collective Responsibility.” Throughout the year, the organization continued to invest in educational initiatives that promoted academic excellence, creativity, skill development, and lifelong learning among young Sri Lankans in both Qatar and Sri Lanka.

One of the major educational highlights of the year was the Sri Lankan Independence Day Competitions 2024, held at Stafford Sri Lankan School in Doha to commemorate Sri Lanka’s 76th Independence Day. More than 400 students participated in drawing, speech, and essay-writing competitions, providing them with opportunities to showcase their creativity, communication skills, and knowledge. The competitions encouraged healthy academic competition, with winners receiving prizes and certificates in recognition of their achievements.

SLMQ also continued its long-standing Independence Day Competitions (IDC) 2023/2024, featuring art, colouring, drawing, and other creative activities for younger participants. These programmes promoted artistic expression, confidence, and creativity while encouraging children to develop their talents in a supportive learning environment.

Educational support extended to Sri Lanka through projects aimed at improving school infrastructure and learning conditions. SLMQ assisted Bakinigahawela School in Monaragala by repairing damaged desks and chairs, creating a more conducive environment for learning. The organization also announced plans to construct new sanitation facilities at MN/Zahira GMMS School in Mannar, contributing to improved educational facilities and student well-being.

Vocational education and skills development remained a key focus during the year. SLMQ supported the Rawlathul Athfal Vocational Training Centre by providing equipment and resources to strengthen practical training opportunities, particularly for women and learners pursuing vocational education and sustainable career skills.

The organization also celebrated academic excellence by recognising the educational achievements of members’ children who graduated in disciplines including Chemical Engineering, Business Management, Information Technology, Medicine, and Qur’anic Studies. By highlighting these accomplishments, SLMQ encouraged young people to pursue higher education and inspired future generations to strive for academic success.

Through educational competitions, school infrastructure development, vocational training support, and recognition of academic achievement, SLMQ continued to strengthen its commitment to education in 2024, empowering students with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities needed to build successful futures.
