The year 2009 reflected Sri Lankan Majlis Qatar’s continued commitment to empowering underprivileged communities through sustainable charitable initiatives. By investing in education, infrastructure development, and youth leadership, the organization focused on creating opportunities that would produce long-term benefits for individuals and families across Sri Lanka. These efforts demonstrated a vision that extended beyond immediate assistance, aiming to build stronger foundations for future generations.

One of the most impactful initiatives during the year was the Scholarship Support Programme, through which financial assistance was provided to twenty-five G.C.E. Advanced Level students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds across Sri Lanka. The programme ensured that deserving students could continue their studies without financial obstacles, while their academic progress was regularly monitored. In addition, scholarships were awarded to students pursuing higher education through the Al Huda Fund, helping talented young individuals advance toward professional careers.

SLMQ also invested in educational infrastructure through the Al Manar Islamic College Furnishing Project in Kattankudy. Financial assistance was provided to furnish classrooms, creating a more supportive learning environment for students. This initiative contributed to improving educational facilities and enhancing the overall quality of learning for young people in the region.

Another significant undertaking was the Al Zahiriya Arabic College Boundary Wall Project in Hemmathagama, Mawanella. The organization funded the construction of a protective boundary wall to safeguard the institution from seasonal flooding. This project addressed a critical need by protecting educational facilities and ensuring a safer environment for students and staff.

Recognizing the importance of developing future leaders, SLMQ sponsored the Leadership Training Programme for School Prefects in Nawalapitiya. Organized for students from various schools, the programme aimed to strengthen leadership skills, confidence, and responsibility among young participants. By nurturing leadership qualities in youth, the initiative contributed to the development of capable individuals who could positively influence their communities.

The organization’s commitment to community infrastructure was further demonstrated through the Maho Sanitation Improvement Project, which involved funding the construction of toilet facilities for a mosque in Atawarala, Maho. This project addressed essential sanitation needs and improved the quality of facilities available to local residents.

Throughout the year, SLMQ maintained a balanced approach to charitable service by supporting both educational advancement and community development. Its initiatives addressed immediate needs while also creating opportunities for long-term growth and self-reliance. Whether through scholarships, infrastructure improvements, or youth development programmes, each project reflected a commitment to empowering individuals and strengthening communities.

The success of these initiatives was made possible through the generosity of donors, volunteers, members, and well-wishers whose contributions enabled meaningful change. Their support allowed SLMQ to extend assistance to those who needed it most and continue its mission of service.

Looking back, 2009 stands as a year of purposeful investment in people and communities. Through the Scholarship Support Programme, Al Manar Islamic College Furnishing Project, Al Zahiriya Arabic College Boundary Wall Project, Leadership Training Programme for School Prefects, and Maho Sanitation Improvement Project, Sri Lankan Majlis Qatar continued to transform compassion into action, creating lasting benefits that would extend well beyond the year itself.
