The true strength of a community is reflected in its willingness to stand beside those facing hardship. During 2004, Sri Lankan Majlis Qatar (SLMQ) continued its commitment to humanitarian service by implementing a range of relief and assistance programmes designed to support vulnerable families and individuals across Sri Lanka. Through targeted interventions and community-driven generosity, the organization transformed concern into meaningful action, providing relief where it was needed most.

One of the most impactful initiatives undertaken during the year was the Shelter Project, which focused on assisting families whose lives had been disrupted by difficult circumstances. Financial support was extended to families who had lost their homes due to ethnic violence in the Muthur area. Working in collaboration with local organizations and community representatives, SLMQ ensured that assistance reached deserving beneficiaries, helping affected families begin the process of rebuilding their lives and restoring a sense of security.

The Shelter Project also provided financial assistance to displaced families in the Puttalam District to repair damaged huts and improve their living conditions. For families already facing the challenges of displacement, access to safe and stable shelter represented a critical need. By supporting housing repairs, the organization helped improve daily living conditions and offered practical relief to households struggling with limited resources.

Responding to the needs of disadvantaged children remained another important priority. Through the Circumcision Project, financial assistance was provided to hundreds of needy children in several regions, including Nawalapitiya, Maskeliya, and Kalpitiya. Implemented in partnership with local organizations, the initiative eased financial burdens on families while ensuring access to an important medical and social service. The project demonstrated SLMQ’s commitment to supporting vulnerable children and promoting their wellbeing.

The organization also extended support through its Flood Relief Assistance Programme, which provided financial aid to schoolchildren affected by flooding. Assistance was specifically directed toward helping children obtain essential footwear and other necessities needed to continue their daily activities. Though modest in scale, this support addressed an immediate need and helped families recover from the impact of natural disasters.

Another notable contribution during the year was the provision of financial assistance for community funeral support services, including support for the purchase of a Sanduk (coffin) for a community institution. While often overlooked, such assistance plays an important role in helping communities respond with dignity during times of bereavement and loss.

Throughout these initiatives, SLMQ demonstrated a consistent focus on addressing practical challenges faced by vulnerable groups. Rather than limiting its efforts to a single area of need, the organization adopted a broad humanitarian approach that included housing assistance, disaster relief, child welfare, and support for families experiencing hardship. This approach ensured that assistance reached people facing different forms of vulnerability across multiple regions.

The achievements of 2004 also highlighted the power of collective responsibility. Contributions from Sri Lankans living and working in Qatar were transformed into tangible support for families, children, and communities in Sri Lanka. Through this connection, geographical distance became an opportunity for solidarity, allowing members of the diaspora to contribute directly to improving lives back home.

Looking back, 2004 stands as a year marked by practical compassion and meaningful outreach. Through the Shelter Project, Flood Relief Assistance Programme, Circumcision Project, and other humanitarian initiatives, SLMQ continued to demonstrate that even modest acts of generosity can create lasting positive change. These efforts not only addressed immediate needs but also reinforced the values of empathy, service, and shared responsibility that remain at the heart of the organization’s mission.
