Education is most powerful when it goes beyond classrooms and textbooks. It becomes truly transformative when it equips individuals with knowledge, skills, confidence, and opportunities to build a better future. Throughout 2013, Sri Lankan Majlis Qatar (SLMQ) embraced this vision by investing in educational development, youth empowerment, career guidance, and scholarship programmes that created meaningful opportunities for students and young people both in Qatar and Sri Lanka.
Recognizing that young people face increasing challenges in education and career planning, SLMQ introduced several initiatives aimed at preparing them for the future. One of the most significant milestones of the year was the launch of a dedicated career guidance programme through the newly established Bachelor’s Wing (BWING). Conducted at FANAR, the programme attracted a large number of young participants who benefited from expert guidance on career planning, professional growth, and personal development. The event also marked the relaunch of SLMQ’s career support services, reinforcing the organization’s commitment to helping youth navigate an increasingly competitive world.
Education was further strengthened through a full-day training programme on Personal Development and Time Management in the Light of Islam. The workshop provided participants with practical skills to manage their time effectively, improve productivity, and develop positive personal habits. By combining professional development with Islamic values, the programme offered a balanced approach to self-improvement and lifelong learning.
SLMQ also continued its long-standing tradition of nurturing young talent through educational competitions. To commemorate Sri Lanka’s 65th Independence Day, the organization conducted a series of competitions for Sri Lankan students in Qatar. These events provided children with opportunities to showcase their creativity, communication skills, and talents in a spirit of healthy competition and national pride. The programme has become an important annual platform for encouraging academic excellence and confidence among young learners.
Beyond Qatar, SLMQ extended its educational support to deserving communities in Sri Lanka through several impactful initiatives. The organization sponsored vocational training programmes for underprivileged young women, enabling them to acquire practical skills and pursue sustainable career opportunities. These programmes not only enhanced employability but also empowered participants to become financially independent and contribute positively to their families and communities.
A major highlight of the year was the continued partnership with the Al Huda Foundation, an educational initiative dedicated to supporting talented students from financially challenged backgrounds. By 2013, the Foundation was providing scholarships to more than eighty-five students across diverse academic disciplines, including medicine, engineering, commerce, arts, and Islamic studies. In collaboration with SLMQ, the scholarship programme was expanded to include vocational training opportunities for youth, ensuring that education remained accessible to those with both academic and technical aspirations.
SLMQ’s commitment to education also extended to institutional development. Financial assistance was provided for teacher training programmes aimed at improving educational standards, while support was extended to educational centres serving children with special needs. Additional contributions helped improve facilities at educational institutions and create more conducive learning environments for students.
The educational achievements of 2013 reflected a broader vision of empowerment through knowledge. Rather than focusing solely on academic success, SLMQ sought to nurture well-rounded individuals equipped with the skills, confidence, and values necessary to thrive in modern society. Through scholarships, competitions, vocational training, career guidance, and personal development programmes, the organization continued to invest in the most valuable resource of any community—its people.
As SLMQ moved forward, these initiatives served as a reminder that every scholarship awarded, every training programme conducted, and every student encouraged represented an investment in a brighter future for generations to come.
