The year 2022 marked an important phase for Sri Lankan Majlis Qatar (SLMQ) as the organization resumed many of its community-focused initiatives following the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Under the theme “Building Community Leadership,” SLMQ continued its commitment to education, youth empowerment, and community development through various programmes aimed at nurturing future leaders and supporting educational advancement.

Education and leadership development remained central to SLMQ’s vision throughout the year. The organization focused on strengthening engagement among members and their families while identifying and facilitating leadership qualities within the community. These efforts were designed to create opportunities for individuals, especially youth, to develop their skills and contribute positively to society.

At the beginning of 2022, SLMQ collaborated with NaviGuys Twitter to organize a free seminar intended to assist undergraduates and young graduates preparing for Sri Lanka’s Open Competitive Examination. Although the programme had to be cancelled due to the economic crisis in Sri Lanka, the initiative reflected SLMQ’s ongoing commitment to supporting educational and career advancement among young people.

SLMQ also planned to commemorate Sri Lanka’s 74th Independence Day through a series of educational competitions at Stafford Sri Lankan School, Qatar. The programme was designed to include art, essay writing, speech, and sports competitions, providing students with opportunities to showcase their talents, creativity, and communication skills. While the event could not proceed because of COVID-19 restrictions, the planned activities demonstrated the organization’s continued dedication to student development and educational engagement.

A significant educational contribution during the year was SLMQ’s continued support for environmental awareness and youth participation through sponsorship of the “Spade to Shade 2022” national tree-planting campaign organized in collaboration with the All-Muslim University Association. Conducted alongside Sri Lanka’s Independence Day celebrations at Al Mubarak National School, Malwana, the programme encouraged environmental responsibility and community participation among students and young people.

Beyond specific events, SLMQ invested considerable effort in planning future educational initiatives aimed at strengthening the younger generation. During 2022, the organization researched and evaluated large-scale projects focusing on Youth Career Development, University Entrance Guidance, Skill Development Programmes, and Drug Awareness Campaigns. These proposed initiatives were aligned with the organization’s leadership-building theme and intended to equip young people with the knowledge, skills, and guidance necessary for future success.

The educational mission of SLMQ continued to be supported by the organization’s broader objectives, which include conducting skill development programmes, seminars, workshops, and educational activities that benefit Sri Lankan families residing in Qatar and communities in Sri Lanka. Through these efforts, SLMQ reaffirmed its long-standing belief that education is a powerful tool for personal growth, community development, and social progress.

Although some planned educational activities could not be fully implemented due to external challenges, 2022 remained a year of preparation, resilience, and renewed commitment. By focusing on leadership development, career guidance, skill enhancement, and educational planning, SLMQ continued laying the foundation for future initiatives that will empower students and young professionals while strengthening the wider community.
