The year 2010 was marked by meaningful humanitarian outreach as Sri Lankan Majlis Qatar (SLMQ) continued its commitment to supporting vulnerable communities through practical assistance and relief efforts. Through initiatives aimed at empowering disadvantaged families and responding to humanitarian crises, the organization translated generosity into tangible support for those facing hardship.
One of the most impactful projects undertaken during the year was the Widow Empowerment Sewing Machine Project, implemented in collaboration with the Young Women Muslim Association (YMMA). Through this initiative, eighteen sewing machines were distributed to needy widows across various parts of Sri Lanka. By providing the tools required for self-employment, the project helped beneficiaries generate sustainable income and improve their financial independence. The programme reflected a long-term approach to charity by enabling families to support themselves with dignity.
SLMQ also contributed to improving essential community facilities through the Attawarala Mosque Sanitation Project. Located in a remote village in the Kurunegala District, the mosque lacked adequate sanitation infrastructure. Funding was provided for the construction of toilet facilities, addressing a basic yet important need for worshippers and local residents. This project enhanced hygiene standards and improved accessibility to essential facilities within the community.
Responding to natural disasters and humanitarian emergencies remained a key focus throughout the year. Through the Sri Lanka Flood Relief Assistance Programme, financial support was extended to families affected by severe flooding in different parts of the country. Assistance was channelled through established organizations to ensure aid reached those most in need. This effort provided timely relief to communities struggling with the consequences of displacement and property damage.
Beyond national borders, SLMQ demonstrated its commitment to global humanitarian solidarity through the Pakistan Flood Relief Initiative. Following the devastating floods that affected millions of people in Pakistan, the organization mobilized support and provided financial assistance to help alleviate suffering. This contribution reflected the organization's readiness to respond to large-scale humanitarian crises irrespective of geographical boundaries.
These charitable initiatives were made possible through the generosity and dedication of SLMQ members, donors, and well-wishers who consistently supported the organization's humanitarian mission.
