The year 2018 demonstrated Sri Lankan Majlis Qatar’s unwavering commitment to humanitarian service through timely and compassionate responses to communities facing unexpected hardships. Guided by the spirit of unity and responsibility, SLMQ extended meaningful assistance to individuals and families affected by natural disasters and social unrest in Sri Lanka.
One of the most impactful humanitarian efforts during the year was the continuation of support for victims of the devastating floods that affected several regions of Sri Lanka. In response to the widespread destruction and displacement caused by the disaster, SLMQ redirected resources and coordinated relief assistance to help affected families rebuild their lives. Through collaboration with local organizations and community partners, essential aid reached those struggling to recover from the aftermath of the floods.
Another significant initiative was the Kandy Riot Relief Initiative, launched in response to the communal violence that affected Muslim families, homes, businesses, and places of worship in the Kandy District. Recognizing the urgent needs of the affected communities, SLMQ joined hands with the Federation of Sri Lankan Muslim Associations (FSMA) Qatar and other stakeholders to contribute towards relief and rehabilitation efforts. The support provided helped families cope with immediate challenges while encouraging resilience and recovery.
These humanitarian interventions reflected the core values of compassion, solidarity, and service. Beyond financial contributions, they represented a collective effort by donors, volunteers, and well-wishers who believed in standing beside those facing adversity. Their generosity enabled assistance to reach vulnerable families at critical moments when support was most needed.
The success of the Flood Relief Assistance Program and the Kandy Riot Relief Initiative reaffirmed the importance of community-driven humanitarian action. By responding swiftly to emergencies and extending support beyond geographical boundaries, SLMQ strengthened its mission of serving humanity and promoting hope during difficult times.
As the year concluded, these relief initiatives stood as powerful examples of how collective compassion can help communities recover, rebuild, and move forward with renewed confidence and dignity.
