The year 2015 reflected Sri Lankan Majlis Qatar’s continued efforts to bring people together through programmes that promoted service, compassion, and active community participation. From health initiatives and humanitarian campaigns to family gatherings and large-scale community events, the year was filled with activities that touched the lives of many Sri Lankans living in Qatar. Rather than focusing on a single project, 2015 was characterized by a diverse range of initiatives that encouraged people to contribute, connect, and support one another.
One of the most impactful initiatives of the year was the Blood Donation Campaign 2014, conducted in collaboration with Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) and Stafford Sri Lankan School. More than one hundred donors participated in the campaign, contributing to an effort that could help save lives and support the healthcare system in Qatar. The programme reflected the willingness of community members to come forward for a cause that benefits society as a whole.
Health and well-being remained a priority through the organization of the Free Medical Camp 2014, held in partnership with Atlas Polyclinic. The programme was designed especially for low-income workers and provided access to medical consultations, health screenings, and specialist services free of charge. Hundreds of individuals, including Sri Lankans and members of other expatriate communities, benefited from the services provided by volunteer doctors and healthcare professionals.
The holy month of Ramadan brought together thousands through the annual Community Ifthar Programme, one of the largest gatherings organized by SLMQ during the year. Held in association with RAF and the Ministry of Interior, the event attracted nearly 2,000 participants and provided an opportunity for members of the Sri Lankan community to come together in an atmosphere of unity and fellowship. The gathering strengthened relationships among families and reinforced the values of sharing and togetherness.
Another memorable occasion was the Annual Eid Prayer and Eid Family Get-Together, where families gathered to celebrate one of the most important events in the Islamic calendar. Following the Eid prayer, participants enjoyed a day of social interaction, recreation, and family activities. The event created an environment where people could reconnect with friends, strengthen relationships, and celebrate as one community.
Community participation was further encouraged through the SLMQ Family Gathering at Umm Salal Farm Garden. Hundreds of families attended the event, enjoying a day filled with recreational activities and opportunities to spend quality time together. The programme was especially popular among children and served as a reminder of the importance of creating spaces where families can relax, interact, and build lasting friendships.
The year also saw strong engagement in sports and recreational activities. The annual Qatar National Sports Day Cricket Tournament brought together teams representing various Sri Lankan associations and old boys’ groups. The tournament encouraged healthy competition while fostering friendship and cooperation among participants. Similarly, SLMQ actively supported the Sri Lankan Community Football Team during the Community Football Tournament, where the team emerged as champions among participants representing more than twelve countries. These achievements generated pride and strengthened community spirit among Sri Lankans living in Qatar.
One of the most vibrant family events of the year was the Annual Cookery Competition, organized under the theme “Kitchen Queen.” Families enthusiastically participated across multiple categories, showcasing creativity, culinary skills, and friendly competition. The event attracted a large number of entries and created an enjoyable atmosphere where participants and spectators alike could celebrate talent and community participation.
Looking back, 2015 was a year shaped by volunteerism, participation, and shared experiences. Whether through health campaigns, blood donation drives, family gatherings, sporting events, or large community celebrations, each initiative contributed to strengthening relationships and creating opportunities for people to support one another. These efforts continued to reinforce the spirit of service and togetherness that has remained at the heart of SLMQ’s journey over the years.
