The year 2014 stood out as a period of meaningful engagement, bringing together Sri Lankan families, professionals, youth, and community leaders through a series of events that celebrated unity, encouraged dialogue, and strengthened social connections. Against a backdrop of growing challenges faced by communities in Sri Lanka, Sri Lankan Majlis Qatar (SLMQ) continued its efforts to create platforms where people could come together, exchange ideas, and build stronger relationships. The year's activities reflected a shared commitment to harmony, participation, and collective progress.

One of the defining highlights of the year was Symposium 2014, held under the theme “Co-Existence Among Communities.” The event brought together members, well-wishers, and distinguished guests for an evening of reflection and discussion on the importance of peaceful coexistence in a diverse society. The keynote address delivered by Dr. Jehan Perera, Executive Director of the National Peace Council of Sri Lanka, explored the role of dialogue, mutual respect, and understanding in building stronger communities. At a time when issues of social harmony were widely discussed, the symposium provided a valuable platform for meaningful conversation and collective reflection.

Another landmark event during the year was the Doha Islamic Convention 2013 – “Reviving Our Spirit.” Organized in collaboration with FANAR and KATARA, the convention attracted nearly 4,000 participants over two days. Featuring internationally recognized speakers including Mufti Ismail Menk and Dr. Muhammad Salah, along with Quran recitations by Shaikh Saad Noumani, the programme inspired audiences through messages of faith, personal development, and positive social values. The overwhelming response highlighted the growing demand for programmes that encourage spiritual growth and community engagement.

The holy month of Ramadan once again became a time of togetherness through a series of Ramadan and Community Ifthar Programmes. Gatherings organized for members, families, and the wider Sri Lankan community created opportunities to reconnect, strengthen friendships, and share the blessings of the season. The Embassy Ifthar, Community Ifthar, and family-focused events brought together people from different backgrounds in an atmosphere of warmth and fellowship. Eid prayers conducted at the Sri Lankan Embassy further reinforced the sense of unity experienced throughout the holy month.

SLMQ also continued to participate actively in programmes that strengthened relationships with the host nation. The organization co-hosted Qatar Independence Day Celebrations in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior, reflecting the appreciation and respect held for Qatar and its people. These activities provided an opportunity for Sri Lankan expatriates to engage with the wider society and contribute positively to the multicultural environment of the country.

Sports and recreation remained an important part of community life through the annual SLMQ Challenge Trophy Cricket Tournament, organized in conjunction with Qatar National Sports Day. The tournament brought together participants from different backgrounds in a spirit of healthy competition, teamwork, and friendship. Beyond the matches themselves, the event served as an occasion for families and supporters to gather and enjoy a shared experience.

Creativity and family participation were celebrated through the SLMQ Annual Cookery Challenge, one of the most vibrant events of the year. With more than fifty contestants taking part, the programme showcased culinary skills, friendly competition, and enthusiastic participation from families. The live salad preparation contest added an exciting element to the event, encouraging involvement from men, women, and children alike while creating an enjoyable atmosphere for everyone present.

Throughout the year, a variety of youth-oriented programmes, social gatherings, and community initiatives continued to create opportunities for learning, interaction, and personal growth. These activities helped strengthen connections among Sri Lankans living in Qatar while fostering a sense of belonging and shared purpose. Through each event, SLMQ continued to provide spaces where individuals and families could engage, contribute, and grow together.

Looking back, 2014 was defined by meaningful conversations, memorable gatherings, and a strong emphasis on bringing people together. From large-scale conventions and symposiums to family events, sports programmes, and Ramadan gatherings, the year demonstrated how shared experiences can strengthen relationships and inspire a greater sense of unity. These efforts helped create lasting memories while reinforcing the values of cooperation, respect, and togetherness that continue to guide the organization's journey.
