Every year brings new challenges and new opportunities to serve. For Sri Lankan Majlis Qatar (SLMQ), 2013 was a period of growth, outreach, and meaningful engagement that touched the lives of individuals and families both in Qatar and Sri Lanka. Through educational initiatives, livelihood assistance, community programmes, and humanitarian support, the organization continued its commitment to creating positive and lasting change.
One of the most impactful areas of focus during the year was livelihood development. Working together with the Young Women’s Muslim Association (YWMA) in Sri Lanka, SLMQ supported more than twenty-four single mothers by providing essential equipment such as sewing machines, gas cookers, and electric ovens. These resources enabled beneficiaries to establish small income-generating activities and improve their family's financial stability.
Education and skill development also remained important priorities. SLMQ partnered with YWMA to sponsor vocational training programmes for underprivileged young women, helping them gain practical skills and access better employment opportunities. In addition, support was extended to scholarship and vocational training initiatives that encouraged youth development and career advancement.
Within Qatar, the organization expanded its outreach by strengthening programmes aimed at young professionals and workers. The Bachelor Wing continued to grow, providing educational sessions, personal development workshops, and career guidance opportunities. These programmes offered valuable support to individuals seeking direction in their professional and personal lives while living away from home.
The year also witnessed a number of public awareness programmes that encouraged discussion on social responsibility, youth development, and contemporary challenges facing the community. These events brought together speakers, professionals, and community members, creating platforms for learning, dialogue, and collective reflection.
SLMQ's commitment to humanitarian service extended beyond long-term development projects. When a labour camp fire in Qatar left more than one hundred Sri Lankan workers without basic necessities, the organization responded promptly by coordinating relief assistance. Support was provided in collaboration with community partners to help affected workers during a particularly difficult period.
Back in Sri Lanka, assistance was also extended to communities facing hardship due to flooding. Fundraising efforts helped provide essential support to affected families, reflecting the strong connection maintained between the Sri Lankan community in Qatar and those facing challenges back home.
The spirit of collaboration was another defining feature of the year. SLMQ introduced a community meeting initiative that brought together representatives from various Sri Lankan groups in Qatar. The gathering encouraged dialogue, cooperation, and collective efforts on matters of common interest, helping strengthen relationships across the wider expatriate community.
Alongside these initiatives, family-oriented events, religious programmes, sports activities, and educational competitions continued to provide opportunities for community members to connect, participate, and celebrate shared values. These gatherings helped reinforce a sense of belonging and strengthened ties among Sri Lankans living in Qatar.
Looking back, 2013 was a year shaped by empowerment, compassion, and community engagement. Whether supporting single mothers, investing in education, assisting those affected by hardship, or creating opportunities for personal growth, each initiative contributed towards building stronger communities and opening new pathways for a better future.
