The year 2007 showcased Sri Lankan Majlis Qatar’s growing commitment to community welfare through initiatives that addressed both immediate needs and long-term community development. From improving infrastructure in rural Sri Lankan villages to bringing families together through community programmes in Qatar, the year reflected a balanced approach to welfare that combined social support, community engagement, and sustainable development. Each initiative demonstrated the organization's belief that meaningful progress is achieved when communities work together to improve the lives of others.
One of the most impactful welfare projects undertaken during the year was the Silmiyapura Bridge Project. Recognizing the difficulties faced by residents in accessing essential community facilities, SLMQ allocated funds for the construction of a bridge connecting the village with its mosque and nearby schools. The project significantly improved accessibility for villagers and students, making daily travel safer and more convenient. More than an infrastructure project, the bridge became a symbol of connection and community development that would benefit residents for years to come.
Environmental responsibility also became a visible part of SLMQ’s community welfare efforts through the annual Beach Cleaning Campaign. Conducted in collaboration with the Sri Lankan Embassy, the Sri Lankan Coordinating Committee, and the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Agriculture, the campaign brought together a large number of volunteers, including families and children. Participants worked collectively to remove waste materials from Qatar’s coastline, contributing to a cleaner environment while promoting civic responsibility and community participation. The event demonstrated how community welfare extends beyond people to include the preservation of shared public spaces.
Community bonding remained an important aspect of SLMQ’s welfare mission throughout the year. The annual Eid Fiesta brought together members and their families for a day filled with recreational activities, games, and social interaction. The event provided an opportunity for families from diverse backgrounds to connect, strengthen friendships, and celebrate together in a welcoming environment. Such gatherings played an important role in fostering a sense of belonging among Sri Lankan Muslim families living away from their homeland.
Another significant community event was the SLMQ Ifthar Reception, which continued for the sixth consecutive year. The gathering welcomed members, newly arrived families, and invited guests, creating a space where community members could come together during the holy month of Ramadan. The event strengthened social ties and encouraged interaction among families while reinforcing the values of generosity, unity, and mutual support that form the foundation of community welfare.
Expanding the spirit of inclusivity even further, SLMQ also organized the Ifthar at the Sri Lankan Embassy, bringing together hundreds of Sri Lankan Muslims living in Qatar. Supported by sponsors and well-wishers, the event became one of the largest community gatherings of the year. The programme provided an opportunity for people from different regions and backgrounds to meet, interact, and celebrate together, reinforcing a strong sense of community identity and solidarity.
Throughout 2007, SLMQ demonstrated that community welfare is not limited to financial assistance alone. Whether through infrastructure development, environmental initiatives, family-oriented gatherings, or programmes that strengthened social connections, the organization continued to create opportunities for people to support and uplift one another. These efforts contributed to a more connected, engaged, and resilient community while laying the groundwork for even greater welfare initiatives in the years that followed.
