The year 2011 was a landmark year for Sri Lankan Majlis Qatar (SLMQ) as the organization celebrated ten years of service to the Sri Lankan Muslim community. Reaching this milestone provided an opportunity not only to reflect on a decade of achievements but also to strengthen initiatives that brought people together, supported those in need, and created a lasting impact both in Qatar and Sri Lanka. Throughout the year, a variety of projects and community-focused programmes reflected the spirit of cooperation and service that had guided the organization since its inception.
One of the notable initiatives continued during the year was the Sewing Machines Project, implemented in partnership with the Young Women’s Muslim Association in Sri Lanka. By providing sewing machines to deserving beneficiaries, the project helped create opportunities for self-employment and financial independence. The initiative focused on enabling individuals to generate sustainable income while supporting the well-being of their families.
Responding to the needs of people affected by natural disasters, SLMQ also participated in a Flood Relief Collection Programme organized in collaboration with the Sri Lankan Islamic Centre (SLIC). The initiative mobilized support for families impacted by severe flooding, demonstrating the willingness of community members to come together and assist those facing difficult circumstances.
A major highlight of the year was the series of Ifthar Programmes organized during Ramadan. These gatherings brought together hundreds of community members, creating opportunities for families and friends to reconnect while sharing the blessings of the holy month. Conducted with the support of various organizations, the programmes strengthened social bonds and encouraged a spirit of generosity and togetherness among participants.
The annual Eid Fiesta once again served as one of the most anticipated events on the community calendar. Families gathered to enjoy recreational activities, friendly competitions, and social interaction in an atmosphere filled with enthusiasm and celebration. The event provided an opportunity for people of all ages to build friendships, create lasting memories, and strengthen their connection with the wider community.
Another memorable event introduced during the year was the Sisters’ Talent Day, a programme designed and organized by women for women. The event showcased creativity, skills, and talents through various activities while providing a platform for participants to interact, share experiences, and build stronger relationships. The success of the programme highlighted the importance of creating inclusive spaces that encourage participation and engagement from all sections of the community.
SLMQ also worked closely with other organizations to support large-scale gatherings such as the Eid-ul-Adha Ijtima Programme, which brought together members of the community for reflection, interaction, and collective participation. Such collaborations strengthened relationships between organizations while creating opportunities for wider community engagement.
As SLMQ marked its tenth anniversary, the year stood as a reminder of how much can be achieved through dedication, volunteerism, and collective effort. From livelihood support projects and disaster relief initiatives to family gatherings and community celebrations, the activities of 2011 reflected a decade-long commitment to bringing people together and supporting those who needed assistance. The milestone year not only celebrated past accomplishments but also laid the foundation for future initiatives that would continue to enrich the lives of individuals and families for years to come.
