The year 2019 was marked by meaningful initiatives that focused on strengthening community bonds, supporting social development projects, and responding with compassion during times of national difficulty. Guided by the theme “Together Towards Tomorrow,” Sri Lankan Majlis Qatar (SLMQ) continued its commitment to fostering unity while extending support to communities in both Qatar and Sri Lanka.
One of the first community-focused initiatives of the year was the Meet & Greet programme held at Al Bidda Park. Designed to strengthen relationships among member families, the gathering provided an opportunity for families to interact, build friendships, and welcome new members into the SLMQ community. The event reflected the organization's belief that strong communities are built upon meaningful personal connections and mutual support.
As part of its ongoing commitment to community development in Sri Lanka, SLMQ sponsored a Teacher Training Seminar in Puttalam. More than 200 male and female teachers benefited from the programme, which aimed to enhance teaching skills and improve educational outcomes. By investing in educators, the initiative contributed to the long-term development of future generations and strengthened educational opportunities within local communities.
Continuing a welfare initiative launched in previous years, SLMQ extended its support to the Zam Zam Media Project. The project focused on promoting responsible media engagement and community awareness. By supporting initiatives that encourage positive communication and social responsibility, SLMQ reinforced its commitment to programmes that create lasting benefits for society.
The Annual Ifthar Programme, one of the organization's most anticipated community gatherings, was planned as part of the year's activities. However, following the tragic Easter Sunday attacks in Sri Lanka, the event was cancelled as a gesture of solidarity with fellow Sri Lankans affected by the tragedy. This decision reflected the organization's compassion, unity, and commitment to standing alongside communities during times of grief and national hardship.
Throughout the year, SLMQ also continued evaluating new welfare initiatives in Sri Lanka, particularly in the areas of self-employment, career development, and education. These efforts demonstrated a forward-looking approach aimed at creating sustainable opportunities for individuals and families while addressing long-term community needs.
The welfare activities undertaken during 2019 highlighted the importance of unity, compassion, and social responsibility. Through community-building programmes, educational support initiatives, and acts of solidarity, SLMQ continued to strengthen its role as an organization dedicated to serving people and improving lives. The year's achievements reinforced the belief that lasting progress is possible when communities come together with a shared commitment to helping others.
