The year 2018 reflected a continued commitment to serving communities through humanitarian assistance, social welfare initiatives, and programmes that promoted unity and mutual support. Guided by the theme “Together Towards Tomorrow,” Sri Lankan Majlis Qatar (SLMQ) focused on projects that addressed the immediate needs of vulnerable communities while fostering stronger social connections among Sri Lankans living both in Qatar and Sri Lanka.
One of the most significant humanitarian efforts during the year was the continued support provided to communities affected by natural disasters in Sri Lanka. Following the devastating floods that impacted several regions, SLMQ worked alongside partner organizations to provide relief assistance to affected families. Funds originally allocated for other community activities were redirected towards flood relief efforts, ensuring that assistance reached those facing urgent challenges. This collective response demonstrated the importance of standing together during times of hardship and extending support where it was needed most.
Recognizing the impact of the floods on children's education, SLMQ also contributed financial assistance towards the establishment of a temporary school facility in Kolonnawa. The initiative helped provide a safe learning environment for children whose education had been disrupted by the disaster. By supporting the continuation of primary education during difficult circumstances, the project offered stability and hope to affected families as they worked to rebuild their lives.
During the year, SLMQ also joined hands with the Federation of Sri Lankan Muslim Associations (FSMA) and other community organizations to support relief efforts for families affected by communal unrest in the Kandy District. The assistance was directed towards communities that suffered losses due to violence, helping affected families begin the process of recovery. This initiative reflected the organization's commitment to supporting peaceful coexistence and standing in solidarity with communities during challenging times.
Another important milestone was the completion of the dining and kitchen complex at the Darul Hasanath Children’s Home in Hemmathagama. This project, funded by SLMQ, enhanced facilities for nearly 150 children residing at the home. The improved infrastructure provided a more comfortable environment for daily activities and strengthened the institution’s ability to care for children facing difficult social circumstances. The successful completion of the project represented a lasting contribution that will continue to benefit future generations.
Community welfare also extended beyond direct assistance projects. During Ramadan, SLMQ organized and participated in community Ifthar programmes that brought together individuals and families from diverse backgrounds. These gatherings strengthened relationships, encouraged social interaction, and promoted the values of generosity, understanding, and community spirit that define the holy month.
The annual Family Fun Day provided another opportunity to strengthen social bonds within the community. Bringing together more than two hundred participants, the event created a welcoming environment for families to connect, interact, and build lasting friendships. Through recreational activities and shared experiences, the programme reinforced the importance of community unity and collective well-being.
The welfare initiatives undertaken throughout 2018 highlighted the power of collective action and compassion. Whether responding to natural disasters, supporting vulnerable children, assisting affected families, or creating opportunities for people to come together, SLMQ continued to demonstrate its commitment to improving lives and strengthening communities. These efforts served as a reminder that meaningful progress is achieved when people unite with a shared purpose and a desire to serve others.
