Some acts of service provide temporary relief, while others create opportunities that can change lives for years to come. During 2010, Sri Lankan Majlis Qatar (SLMQ) focused on initiatives that not only responded to immediate needs but also helped individuals and communities move towards a more secure future. Through livelihood assistance, humanitarian support, and community-focused projects, the year was marked by efforts that brought hope and practical solutions to those facing difficult circumstances.

A particularly meaningful initiative was the Sewing Machine Distribution Project, carried out in collaboration with the Young Women Muslim Association (YMMA). Eighteen widows from different parts of Sri Lanka received sewing machines, providing them with an opportunity to earn an income and support their families independently. Rather than offering short-term assistance, the project empowered beneficiaries with a tool that could help them build a sustainable livelihood and regain financial confidence.

The year also saw SLMQ extend a helping hand to communities affected by natural disasters. Through its Flood Relief Assistance Programme, financial contributions were provided to families impacted by severe flooding in Sri Lanka. Assistance was also directed towards victims of the devastating floods in Pakistan. These contributions reflected a spirit of compassion that reached beyond borders, offering support to people struggling to recover from unexpected hardship.

Another project that delivered long-term benefits was the construction of Toilet Facilities at Attawarala Mosque in Kurunegala District. Access to proper sanitation facilities is a basic necessity that directly affects the quality of life of a community. By supporting this initiative, SLMQ contributed towards improving facilities that would serve worshippers and residents for many years to come.

Community life in Qatar continued to flourish through a series of gatherings that brought families together. The annual SLMQ Family Ifthar, along with Ifthar programmes organized in partnership with the Sri Lankan Embassy, the Ministry of Interior, and Qatar Guest Centre, created opportunities for members of the community to reconnect, share experiences, and strengthen relationships. These occasions fostered a sense of unity among Sri Lankan families living far from home.

Environmental responsibility was also encouraged through the annual Beach Cleaning Campaign, where volunteers dedicated their time to preserving public spaces and promoting awareness about environmental stewardship. The programme demonstrated how collective action, even through simple initiatives, can create a positive impact on society.

The year's celebrations reached another highlight with Eid Fiesta 2010, which brought together families for a day of recreation, friendly competition, and social interaction. The event provided an opportunity for adults and children alike to build friendships, create memories, and enjoy a shared sense of community spirit.

SLMQ also responded to a request from the Sri Lankan Embassy by supporting the installation of a Service Counter Partition Structure, a project that improved the experience of visitors accessing embassy services. Though modest in scale, the improvement benefited countless Sri Lankans who relied on the embassy for assistance and documentation.

Looking back, 2010 was a year defined by practical action and lasting impact. Whether helping widows establish a source of income, supporting families affected by disasters, improving community facilities, or creating spaces where people could come together, each initiative reflected a simple but powerful idea: meaningful change begins when people invest in the well-being of others.
