The year 2024 reflected Sri Lankan Majlis Qatar’s (SLMQ) continuing commitment to creating positive change through meaningful initiatives that benefited families, students, communities, and the environment. Guided by the theme “Collective Responsibility,” the organization focused on programmes that promoted personal development, social well-being, environmental stewardship, and support for vulnerable communities both in Qatar and Sri Lanka.

One of the year’s most inspiring initiatives was the Islamic Bayan Programme – Welcoming Ramadan, held in March 2024. The gathering provided members with an opportunity to prepare spiritually for the holy month of Ramadan through reflection, learning, and meaningful discussion. Delivered by Sheikh Hassan Fareed Moulavi, the programme encouraged participants to strengthen their faith and embrace the values of compassion, generosity, and self-improvement.

Continuing the spirit of togetherness during Ramadan, SLMQ organized the Annual Iftar Programme on the fifteenth day of the holy month. Bringing together more than one hundred families, the event featured a special religious lecture, communal prayers, and an evening meal shared among members. Beyond its religious significance, the gathering strengthened relationships and fostered a sense of unity among families living away from their homeland.

Environmental responsibility remained a key focus throughout the year. In collaboration with local partners, SLMQ conducted the Beach Cleaning Campaign at Zikreet Beach, where volunteers worked together to remove waste from the coastline. The initiative resulted in the collection of numerous bags of plastic, glass, and other litter, helping preserve the natural environment while promoting awareness about sustainable practices and responsible citizenship.

SLMQ also extended its support to educational institutions in Sri Lanka through the Bakinigahawela School Furniture Restoration Project. Recognizing the importance of a conducive learning environment, the organization assisted in repairing damaged chairs and desks, helping students and teachers benefit from improved classroom facilities. This initiative reflected SLMQ’s long-standing belief that education remains one of the most effective pathways to social progress.

Addressing essential infrastructure needs, plans were initiated for the MN/ZAHIRA GMMS School Sanitation Improvement Project in Mannar. The proposed construction of two new toilet facilities aims to provide a safer and healthier environment for students and staff while addressing urgent sanitation challenges faced by the school community.

Another significant initiative highlighted during the year was Spade to Shade 5.0, a tree-planting programme conducted in partnership with educational and community organizations in Sri Lanka. The project contributed to environmental conservation efforts while encouraging young people and local communities to participate in protecting and preserving natural resources for future generations.

SLMQ also continued its commitment to economic empowerment through its Women-Headed Family Support Initiatives. By assisting livelihood and self-employment projects, the organization helped women gain access to opportunities that can improve household income and create greater financial stability. These efforts reflected a broader commitment to strengthening families through sustainable development rather than short-term assistance alone.

The initiatives undertaken during 2024 demonstrated how collective effort can create meaningful and lasting benefits. Through environmental action, educational support, family empowerment, spiritual development, and infrastructure improvements, SLMQ continued to transform its vision of shared responsibility into practical action. These achievements stand as a reminder that lasting progress is possible when individuals come together with a common purpose and a commitment to serving others.
