After a challenging period marked by the global pandemic, 2022 became a year of renewed engagement and purposeful action for Sri Lankan Majlis Qatar (SLMQ). With a focus on supporting people in need, encouraging environmental responsibility, and responding to emerging challenges in Sri Lanka, the organization continued its tradition of serving society through impactful initiatives.
Demonstrating its commitment to environmental sustainability, SLMQ once again partnered with the All-Muslim University Association to support the Spade to Shade 2022 national tree-planting campaign. Conducted alongside Sri Lanka’s 74th Independence Day celebrations, the initiative took place at Al Mubarak National School, Malwana. By contributing to large-scale tree planting efforts, the project aimed to create a greener environment and inspire future generations to take responsibility for protecting natural resources.
Early in the year, SLMQ was approached by NaviGuys with plans for a free seminar intended to assist undergraduates and young graduates preparing for competitive examinations. Although the seminar could not proceed due to the worsening economic crisis in Sri Lanka, SLMQ responded to the situation in a different way. The organization provided dry food supplies and financial assistance to support relief efforts aimed at easing the hardships faced by affected communities.
One of the most cherished gatherings of the year was the Annual Ifthar Programme, held on 14 April 2022 at Phoenix School, Doha. The event brought together members and families in a spirit of unity, gratitude, and togetherness during the holy month of Ramadan. Beyond sharing a meal, the gathering strengthened relationships and reinforced the values of compassion and mutual support that have long been central to the organization.
As Sri Lanka faced severe economic and healthcare challenges, SLMQ stepped forward with a timely Medical Equipment and Medicine Donation initiative. Essential medical supplies and equipment were provided to the Ministry of Health in Sri Lanka, helping healthcare institutions continue serving communities during a period of significant strain. This contribution reflected the organization's dedication to supporting critical needs when assistance was most required.
Looking toward the future, SLMQ began exploring a range of programmes designed to empower young people across Sri Lanka. These proposed initiatives included Youth Career Development, University Entrance Guidance, Skill Development Programmes, and Drug Awareness Campaigns. By investing in education, personal growth, and awareness, these efforts aim to equip young individuals with the knowledge and opportunities needed to build successful futures.
The initiatives undertaken during 2022 reflected a commitment to supporting people, strengthening social bonds, and addressing pressing challenges both locally and in Sri Lanka. From environmental projects and humanitarian assistance to healthcare support and youth empowerment, SLMQ continued to create opportunities for meaningful change while laying the foundation for future generations to thrive.
