The year 2008 was another significant chapter in the journey of Sri Lankan Majlis Qatar (SLMQ), reflecting the organization's continued commitment to serving communities both in Qatar and Sri Lanka through meaningful welfare and humanitarian initiatives. Throughout the year, SLMQ focused on strengthening community bonds, supporting vulnerable individuals, and creating opportunities for social engagement and empowerment. These efforts reinforced the organization's vision of building a caring and connected community that extends beyond geographical boundaries.
One of the most impactful community welfare initiatives undertaken during the year was the establishment of a Vocational Training Centre for Muslim Ladies in Warakapola. Managed by the Sri Lankan Muslim Ladies’ Study Circle, the centre was created to equip women with practical skills that could enhance their economic independence and improve their quality of life. By supporting women's empowerment and self-reliance, the initiative contributed to the long-term development of families and communities.
Within Qatar, SLMQ continued to strengthen community cohesion through the annual Eid Fiesta, which brought together members and their families in a spirit of friendship and celebration. The event provided an opportunity for families to connect, participate in recreational activities, and strengthen the bonds that unite the Sri Lankan Muslim community. For many expatriate families, such gatherings played an important role in maintaining a sense of belonging while living away from home.
During the holy month of Ramadan, SLMQ organized several Community Ifthar Gatherings, creating opportunities for members to come together and share the blessings of the season. These gatherings fostered unity, encouraged interaction among families, and reinforced the values of generosity, compassion, and mutual support that form the foundation of a strong community.
A notable example of SLMQ’s humanitarian commitment was its response to a fire incident in Doha that affected a number of Sri Lankan workers. The organization extended assistance to those who had lost their accommodation and personal belongings, helping them cope with the immediate challenges caused by the disaster. This timely intervention highlighted SLMQ’s readiness to support community members during times of crisis and uncertainty.
Community engagement remained at the heart of SLMQ’s activities throughout the year. Through family-oriented programmes, social gatherings, and welfare-focused initiatives, the organization continued to create opportunities for meaningful interaction and mutual support among Sri Lankan Muslims living in Qatar. These efforts helped nurture a sense of solidarity and strengthened the community’s ability to support one another during both celebrations and hardships.
The achievements of 2008 demonstrated that community welfare is built not only through financial assistance but also through empowerment, compassion, and collective action. Whether supporting women through vocational training, responding to emergencies, or creating spaces for families to connect and thrive, SLMQ continued to make a positive impact on the lives of many individuals and families. The year's initiatives further strengthened the organization's role as a trusted community institution dedicated to service, unity, and social well-being.
