The year 2017 was marked by initiatives that focused on improving the lives of vulnerable families, supporting long-term self-reliance, and strengthening connections within the Sri Lankan community in Qatar. Through livelihood assistance programmes, humanitarian projects, and family-centred activities, Sri Lankan Majlis Qatar (SLMQ) continued its efforts to create opportunities that addressed real needs while bringing people together in a spirit of care and cooperation.

One of the most significant initiatives highlighted during the year was the “Enriching Lives” Project, implemented in Colombo and its surrounding areas. The project was designed to improve the living conditions of vulnerable families residing in economically disadvantaged communities. Many of the beneficiaries were women-led households facing financial hardship and social challenges. Through targeted livelihood support, the programme helped families establish sustainable sources of income and work towards a more secure future. A total of thirty families benefited from the initiative, making it one of the most impactful projects undertaken during the period.

Building on this commitment to economic empowerment, SLMQ also completed a Women’s Livelihood Development Project in partnership with Muslim Aid. The programme supported single and widowed women who served as the primary providers for their families. By helping beneficiaries strengthen their earning capacity and establish income-generating activities, the project created opportunities for long-term financial stability rather than short-term assistance. Twenty-five families benefited directly from this initiative, enabling many women to move forward with greater confidence and independence.

Another important contribution during the year was the support provided to the Darul Hasanath Children Home in Hemmathagama. SLMQ funded the construction of a new dining and kitchen complex for the institution, which provides care and shelter to nearly 150 orphaned children. The facility improved daily living conditions for the residents and strengthened the home's ability to continue its valuable work of caring for children affected by difficult social circumstances.

Community connection remained an important part of the year's activities through several Community Ifthar Programmes organized during Ramadan. Large gatherings brought together families, workers, and community members from different backgrounds, creating opportunities to reconnect, strengthen relationships, and share the spirit of generosity associated with the holy month. These programmes reflected the importance of maintaining strong social bonds among Sri Lankans living away from their homeland.

The annual Family Fun Day provided another opportunity for families to come together in a relaxed and enjoyable environment. Organized at a farmhouse in Umm Salal Ali, the event featured recreational activities, games, and entertainment for both adults and children. Beyond the enjoyment it offered, the gathering helped strengthen friendships and foster a sense of belonging among community members.

The year also brought special recognition when SLMQ received an Appreciation Award from the Ministry of Interior of Qatar for its contribution to community activities. The award acknowledged years of dedication and service, reflecting the positive role the organization continued to play within the wider community.

Looking back, 2017 was a year defined by practical support and lasting impact. From empowering vulnerable families and supporting orphaned children to creating opportunities for people to connect and support one another, the year's initiatives demonstrated how collective effort can make a meaningful difference. Through projects that addressed both social and economic challenges, SLMQ continued its journey of serving communities with compassion, responsibility, and purpose.
