The year 2025 was a testament to the power of collective action, demonstrating how meaningful initiatives can transform lives and strengthen communities. Guided by the spirit of service and the theme “Enduring Challenges, Empowering Communities,” Sri Lankan Majlis Qatar (SLMQ) continued its efforts to support education, healthcare, livelihoods, environmental sustainability, and humanitarian causes in both Qatar and Sri Lanka.
One of the most significant humanitarian efforts undertaken during the year was the Support for Gaza Evacuees Project in Qatar. Recognizing the challenges faced by displaced families, SLMQ donated tables and chairs to improve the activity room at the Gazan Evacuees Compound. The initiative created a more comfortable and engaging environment where children could participate in educational and recreational activities, helping them regain a sense of normalcy during a difficult period.
Education remained a key area of focus through the School Furniture Restoration Project at Bakinigahawela Muslim Central College. Worn-out desks and chairs were repaired and restored, providing students with a more comfortable and effective learning environment. By improving classroom facilities, the project contributed directly to enhancing educational experiences and supporting student development.
SLMQ also invested in improving healthcare infrastructure through the Clinic Renovation Project at MN/Periyamadhu. The clinic’s roof was reconstructed, and seating arrangements were upgraded to provide safer and more comfortable facilities for expectant mothers and patients. This initiative strengthened access to quality healthcare services while supporting maternal and child well-being within the local community.
Addressing a critical infrastructure need, the Waterline Installation Project at MN/Periyamadhu Maha Vidyalayam brought reliable access to clean water for students and staff. The project significantly improved hygiene standards and daily operations at the school, ensuring a healthier and more supportive educational environment for future generations.
Further strengthening educational facilities, SLMQ completed the Washroom Renovation Project at MN/Zahira G.M.M.S Alakkaddu. The fully renovated sanitation facilities provided students with improved hygiene and safety standards, contributing to a healthier school environment and enhancing the overall well-being of hundreds of children.
Economic empowerment continued to be a major priority through the Self-Employment Support Programme. Financial assistance was provided to widows, low-income families, and individuals seeking opportunities to improve their livelihoods. Beneficiaries were able to establish or expand small businesses such as tailoring services, grocery shops, and other micro-enterprises, creating sustainable income sources and promoting long-term self-reliance.
Supporting career development and equal opportunities, SLMQ sponsored the Management Service Officers Examination Preparation Seminar 2025. The programme benefited more than 120 Tamil-medium candidates preparing for entry into Sri Lanka’s state service. Through expert guidance, examination strategies, and motivational support, participants were better equipped to pursue professional opportunities and build successful careers.
Another impactful initiative was the Widows’ Sewing Project, which provided sewing machines and garment-making accessories to widowed women. By equipping beneficiaries with practical income-generating tools, the project enabled them to support their families independently while building confidence and financial security.
Environmental responsibility remained an important pillar of SLMQ’s activities. The Environmental Cleanup Drive at Singing Sand Dunes brought together families and volunteers to preserve one of Qatar’s natural landmarks. Beyond cleaning the environment, the initiative promoted awareness about sustainability and encouraged younger generations to become responsible stewards of nature.
A landmark project completed during the year was the Community Well Construction Project in Radagama, Hettipola. The newly constructed well provided reliable access to clean water for approximately forty families, significantly improving living conditions and contributing to long-term community development. This initiative created lasting benefits for residents and reflected SLMQ’s commitment to sustainable solutions that continue serving communities for years to come.
The year also saw a strong focus on personal growth and empowerment through the Ladies’ Skills Development Workshop 2025 and the Ladies’ Wellness & Communication Programme – Vital Voices. These initiatives provided women with practical skills, business knowledge, health awareness, communication techniques, and confidence-building opportunities. By empowering women with valuable knowledge and resources, SLMQ helped strengthen families and contribute to broader social development.
The initiatives undertaken throughout 2025 demonstrated how compassion, dedication, and collective responsibility can create lasting change. From supporting education and healthcare to empowering women, improving livelihoods, promoting environmental stewardship, and extending humanitarian assistance, SLMQ continued to transform challenges into opportunities for progress. These achievements stand as a powerful reminder that meaningful change begins when communities unite with a shared commitment to serving others and building a better future for all.
