The year 2009 was marked by significant achievements in educational development as Sri Lankan Majlis Qatar (SLMQ) continued its mission of empowering students through scholarships, leadership training, and educational enrichment programmes. Through a combination of financial assistance, academic support, and skill-building initiatives, the organization helped create opportunities for students from diverse backgrounds to pursue their educational aspirations.
One of the most impactful initiatives undertaken during the year was the continued support of the Scholarship Programme for 25 G.C.E. Advanced Level students from various parts of Sri Lanka. Financial assistance was provided to deserving students, enabling them to continue their studies with greater confidence and stability. The programme was administered through the Al Huda Fund, which also monitored the academic progress of beneficiaries to ensure the effectiveness of the initiative.
In addition to supporting Advanced Level students, SLMQ granted higher education scholarships to five students pursuing further studies. These scholarships reflected the organization’s commitment to nurturing academic excellence and helping young people access opportunities that would contribute to their personal and professional growth.
Recognizing the importance of leadership development among youth, SLMQ sponsored Leadership Training Programmes for Advanced Level students in collaboration with educational institutions and youth organizations. These programmes were designed to enhance leadership qualities, communication skills, teamwork, and personal development, preparing students to become responsible future leaders within their communities.
Educational activities extended beyond Sri Lanka through the organization’s programmes in Qatar. The annual 61st Independence Day Competitions attracted over 120 children who participated in colouring, drawing, essay writing, and public speaking contests. These events encouraged creativity, critical thinking, and self-expression while strengthening cultural awareness among young participants.
SLMQ’s Quran Classes, which had been running continuously since 2002, remained one of the organization’s flagship educational programmes. Conducted twice weekly by qualified teachers, the classes provided structured learning in Quran recitation, Tajweed, Islamic studies, and moral values. Regular assessments ensured steady progress among students, while annual Quran competitions motivated participants to excel in recitation, memorization, speeches, and Islamic knowledge.
The 5th Annual Quran Class Competition, held in May 2009, brought together nearly 45 students who showcased their talents in Quran recitation, memorization, Islamic quizzes, and speech contests. The event served as an important platform for encouraging academic discipline, confidence, and religious learning among young participants.
Through scholarships, leadership development programmes, educational competitions, and religious education initiatives, SLMQ continued to make a meaningful contribution to the advancement of education in 2009. These efforts reflected the organization’s belief that investing in knowledge and character development is essential for building capable individuals and stronger communities for the future.
