The year 2017 marked another significant chapter in Sri Lankan Majlis Qatar (SLMQ)’s commitment to advancing education under the theme “Empowering Our Youth.” Recognizing education as the foundation for future success, the organization continued to invest in initiatives that nurtured academic excellence, creativity, leadership, and lifelong learning.
One of the major educational highlights of the year was the annual Independence Day Competitions, where Sri Lankan children in Qatar participated in essay writing, public speaking, drawing, and colouring contests. These activities encouraged creativity, communication skills, critical thinking, and self-confidence while promoting healthy competition and cultural awareness among young participants.
SLMQ further strengthened educational development through a series of motivational lectures and knowledge-sharing programmes. Sessions such as “The Three I’s for Ultimate Success” inspired students to pursue academic excellence through discipline, knowledge, perseverance, and personal growth, encouraging them to set meaningful educational and career goals.
The organization also continued its support for education in Sri Lanka by providing scholarships and vocational training opportunities for deserving students. These initiatives enabled young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to continue their studies, develop professional skills, and improve their future career prospects.
A significant contribution to educational infrastructure was the completion of a classroom project for Fathima Balika Vidyalaya in Badulla. The new learning facility provided a better educational environment for primary school students, improving access to quality education in the region.
Another noteworthy initiative was the Sri Lanka Administrative Service (SLAS) Seminar held in Puttalam. The seminar provided guidance to candidates preparing for competitive government service examinations, offering valuable insights into career development and encouraging young people to pursue leadership roles in public service.
Through educational competitions, scholarships, vocational training, motivational programmes, career guidance seminars, and school infrastructure development, SLMQ continued to empower students and invest in education during 2017, helping young people build the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed for a successful future.
